London Dentist: How Long Do Dental Fillings Last?

The most common types of dental restorations are dental fillings. London, Ontario, patients often want to know how long they can expect their fillings to last. There is no single answer to this query, as fillings come in several different types.

Amalgam Fillings

The most common type of fillings are made from amalgam, a silver material that contains a variety of different metals. These fillings are a long-lasting option, with a lifespan of between 10 and 15 years. However, they can cause damage to your teeth, leading to cracks, fractures, and discolouration.

Gold Fillings

Gold fillings are one of the most durable choices, lasting at least 10 years and usually 15 years or longer. They are non-corrodible and can withstand biting forces on the back teeth.

Ceramic Fillings

Fast becoming a popular option, ceramic fillings match the colour of your teeth and have a long lifespan. They are usually made from porcelain, which can last for more than 15 years.

Composite Fillings

Although composites are an aesthetically-pleasing choice, many patients prefer to opt for a different material due to the shorter lifespan of composites. In some cases, composite fillings last only five years. They also stain easily. However, when cavities are small and when composite fillings are used for teeth other than molars, they can last longer.

Glass Ionomer

A less-common option is glass ionomer, which contains a special type of glass and acrylic. Such fillings tend to be just for cavities below the gum line and for young children. This is because the material releases fluoride to prevent further decay. Glass ionomer is ideal for tooth decay in baby teeth, as the fillings wear down and fracture over time. They tend to last less than five years.

At Creative Dentistry, you can receive any of the above types of fillings. Book an appointment to receive the filling of your choice.
