4 Important Facts About Dental Veneers

If you have a damaged front tooth, you may be considering dental veneers. London, Ontario, patients can receive dental veneers to mask a range of problems, including cracks, stains, and misshapen teeth. However, before you decide that a veneer is right for you, there are a few things you should know.

1. Veneers Are Ideal for Minor Problems

A veneer is a porcelain shell that sits over the front of your tooth. This is perfect for covering teeth that are the wrong shape, size, or colour. A veneer can also improve the appearance of misaligned teeth or close the space between teeth. However, if damage, alignment, or gaps are too extensive, you’ll need a different solution.

2. Veneers Are a Permanent Solution

To fit the veneer, your dentist will need to remove some of the surface of your tooth. This means that your tooth will always need a veneer. The good news is that veneers are long-lasting, resistant to stains, and as strong as a natural tooth. Provided you only use your veneer to bite food, you shouldn’t need a replacement for many years.

3. There Are Two Types of Veneers

An alternative to traditional veneers is a minimal prep veneer. These require little or no preparation, meaning your dentist will be able to remove less of your tooth. Minimal prep veneers are only suitable in some cases.

4. Veneers Require Little Maintenance

To keep your veneer in top condition, you need to treat it just like the rest of your teeth. This means brushing at least twice a day (you may need to switch to a non-abrasive toothpaste) and receiving regular checkups. If you grind your teeth at night, you will also need a mouthguard to protect your veneer from damage.
